Brazil presidential election: Lula and Bolsonaro called each other liars at the debate

This is reported by France24.

“Хаотичний обмін репліками, в ході якого опоненти неодноразово називали один одного брехунами, звинувачували у корупції та згадували різноманітні скандали, яскраво відобразив атмосферу запеклої передвиборчої кампанії в країні, що потерпає від глибокої поляризації”, notes the publication.

45-year-old Bolsonaro, the son of former president, far-right politician Жаїра Болсонару, unexpectedly outscored Lulu in the first round earlier this month.

According to polls, a fierce fight is expected in the second round, which will be held 25 October.

Opponents discussed issues such as the economy, public safety, health care, corruption, and Brazil's relationship with Сполученими Штатами.

“Бразилія відправить вас на пенсію”,

- burned out Bolsonaro.

Throughout the debate, he tried to get his opponent out of balance: he walked back and forth behind his back (in camera field of view), shook his head, smiled mockingly, and let go of disrespectful comments while he spoke.

Lula called Bolsonaro “завзятим брехуном” and “бандитом”, saying he did not want to stand next to “міліціонером” - suggesting that it may have links to paramilitary groups in Rio de Janeiro.

Bolsonaro, who had mentioned Lula's imprisonment several times on corruption charges (which were later overturned), replied that it was better to stay away, “бо можуть поцупити гаманець”.

Lula, who is almost 81 year, is running for a fourth term. Although since the first round Bolsonaro leads in polls, this week his advantage has decreased slightly: according to two polls, he is ready to vote for 51% of voters, while for Lulu - 49%.
