Костенко explained how long it will take Ukraine to replace Starlink

Ukraine is already working on alternatives to the Starlink satellite system, but it will not be possible to completely replace it even in a year. It may take several years

This was told by the MP of Ukraine, the Secretary of the parliamentary Committee on national security, defense and intelligence, Colonel СБУ Роман Костенко on the air of Espreso.

According to him, the problem lies not only in the availability of other satellite systems, but also in the scale of use of Starlink in Ukraine, the number of terminals and the need to integrate alternative solutions into the defense system.

"Деяка альтернатива вже є, і у французів, і у британців, але тут питання в тому, що це ж питання терміналів. Ви ж розумієте, у нас сотні тисяч терміналів, які знаходяться в Україні, люди, які вже навчені з ними працювати, і кожного дня вони там щось знищуються разом з дронами, щось перестає працювати, кожного дня це замінюється", he said.

Роман Костенко stressed that it will be difficult to quickly introduce new technology into the Ukrainian defense system.

"І ще раз це питання того, що ми вже над цим працюємо, і щось прийти, принести нове, це дуже складно навіть впровадити його в систему нашої оборони. Але деякі речі вже є, і це питання тільки в тому, що це кількість терміналів, за які потрібно знову ж таки платити кошти", he added.

He explained that alternative solutions differ in the type of orbit of the satellites and the characteristics of the work.

"І це супутники різні, хтось використовує середньо-орбітальні супутники, там в них є своя специфіка роботи, хтось також використовує низьку орбіту, як Starlink, їх там менше цих супутників", said the MP.

According to the MP, the possibilities of alternative systems may depend on the specific region where they will be used.

"Тому альтернатива вже пропрацьовується, вона є, але звичайно вона точно там навіть за рік не зможе замінити Starlink в такій масовості, там окремі там зможуть працювати, але в такій масовості це і дорого, і не так якісно. Тому звичайно на це можуть піти досить такий, може декілька років, не короткий час", he noted.

Роман Костенко also noted that Starlink is difficult to replace due to the scale of the satellite constellation and the ability to provide communication.

"Точно замінити на 100% Starlink ніхто не може в світі. Тому що це серйозна система, яка там включає в себе тисячі супутників, які літають на низькій орбіті і забезпечують в першу чергу зв'язок", he added.

At the same time, according to him, European partners began to actively look for alternatives after the situation around Starlink.

"Але європейські партнери, побачивши, що відбувається з Starlink, точно вже почали працювати. Деякі західні компанії, такі як Фінляндія, Франція, маючи свої космічні можливості, підприємства, які будують супутники, вони вже розглядають можливості, запускають свої перші супутники для того, щоб мати альтернативу Starlink", he concluded.
