On Saturday, 17 October, Romanian F-16 fighters shot down two Russian drones over the country's territorial waters

The interception was reported by the Romanian Defense Ministry.

Two F-16s, which were on duty from airspace protection, rose from the 86 Borch Air Base on Saturday, 17 October, at 17:43 local time. Radars detected a group of air targets about 120 kilometers east of Snake Island. They were moving south-west.

On 17:59, the first target entered Romanian airspace, and on 18:01 it was shot down by one of the fighters. The second target entered on 18:01 and on 18:05 was shot down by the second F-16.

"Обидві повітряні цілі ідентифіковані як безпілотники та збиті над територіальними водами Румунії", the ministry said.

The Ministry did not name the type and affiliation of the drones. Militarny writes about their probable Russian origin, analyzing the route.

Drones found 120 km east of Zmiyinsky, about 65 km from the occupied Crimea and 140 km from the coast controlled by Ukraine. They flew from Crimea towards the Romanian coast.

Such a route, according to the publication, may indicate that Russia launched them.

  • Recall that 15 October МЗС Romania said that Russia is turning the Black Sea into a dangerous zone for civilian vessels. During the day, drones attacked four merchant ships, in particular in the territorial waters of Romania, and killed eight people. НАТО countries are to gather within a few days.
