According to the statement of the defenders, 50-year-old Pike was returned to prison, where she has been for 30 years. There she continues to receive medical care.

The woman survived after two injections of the deadly dose of the drug pentobarbital administered 30 September, resulting in a critical condition.

Earlier this week, Pike came to her senses and began to talk, which stunned experts, medical staff and their lawyers. Her case is now unprecedented. She is believed to be the only person who survived the attempted execution by lethal injection.

Адвокати Пайк noted that it is “вдячна рятувальникам і медичній бригаді за турботу в цих надзвичайних обставинах”.

It is not yet known what kind of medical care Pike receives after returning to prison, but earlier her lawyers said that “тривалий шлях до одужання” was waiting for her.

The Tennessee Department of Corrections has not yet explained why the execution did not take place as planned.

During the court hearing on Wednesday, Assistant Attorney General Теннессі Вілл Ейрс told the judge that he did not know whether the state intended to again attempt to carry out the death sentence against her. The judge ordered the state to retain all evidence related to failed attempts to introduce a lethal injection. This evidence could be the basis for a future lawsuit against the state.

  • Pike was 18 years old when she and her then boyfriend Тадарілом Шиппом beat, tortured and killed 19-year-old Коллін Слеммер. They met in a vocational training camp for young people from low-income families. Shipp escaped the death penalty because he was not an adult at the time of the crime. He is still imprisoned.
  • Pike was to be the first woman to be executed in Tennessee in over 200 years.
