According to the diplomat, Trump does not focus on Ukraine, because he has his own goals, which are justified by the interests of the American people. At the same time, Chaly suggests that the reason for the broadcast of Russian narratives by the American president may be his attitude to his own environment and confidence in Putin.

"Трамп про Україну не думає взагалі, від слова зовсім, тому що в нього є свої цілі, і обґрунтовує він це інтересами американського народу. От і все. Але чому так сталося, що наративи він почав транслювати саме російські? У мене є припущення, що він, не довіряючи своїм, навіть власному оточенню, а в нього завжди недовіра до багатьох людей, може довіряти словам Путіна", said Chaly.

He gave an example with calls to stop Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries. According to the diplomat, if Putin insisted on this, Trump could support such a position.

"І якщо Путін, а це зрозуміло, наполягав на тому, що Україна має припинити бити по НПЗ, то Трамп так і зробив, як попросив Путін: заявив, що Україна має припинити бити по НПЗ", explained Chaly.

The diplomat stressed that it would be a mistake to evaluate the actions of the American president through the prism of international law, established values and rules of warfare. According to him, Trump acts in accordance with his own understanding of interests.

"Це ми думаємо, що Трамп живе в парадигмі цінностей, законодавства, правил ведення війни. Нічого подібного: він живе в парадигмі суто своїх інтересів. Світ XIX століття, коли країнам дозволялося агресивно окуповувати інші території, йому простіший у його системі координат", said Chaly.

He added that such a worldview explains Trump’s commitment to the methods used by authoritarian leaders, in particular Putin and the leader of Північної Кореї Кім Чен Ин.
