Ukraine is ready to organize presidential elections if Russian dictator Vladimir Putin agrees to a ceasefire for a period of 60 days
This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reports Sky News.
"If Putin agrees to a 60-day truce, Ukraine will hold elections," the head of state said.
This statement came after US President Donald Trump publicly called on Ukrainians to elect a new leader of the country.
Elections in Ukraine
Elections are not currently held in Ukraine due to martial law: Article 19 of the Law of Ukraine "On the Legal Regime of Martial Law" directly prohibits the holding of presidential, parliamentary and local elections during this period. In addition, the organization of voting is complicated by security risks, the participation of military personnel, the voting of Ukrainians abroad and the impossibility of full expression of will in the occupied territories.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously emphasized that he is ready to hold elections provided that security is guaranteed and the necessary legal conditions are created. In December 2025, he stated that Ukraine could prepare for voting within 60 to 90 days if the US and European partners help ensure security.
At the Munich Security Conference on February 14, 2026, the president directly stated: "Give us two months of truce, and we will go to the elections." He explained that time for preparation, security infrastructure and the opportunity to vote for the military are needed. Zelenskyy also noted that the parliament will have to change legislation to hold elections.
